See my earlier posts; I prefer a bowler with a double-breasted pin-stripe suit.

Ok, before I start a whole new thread, does anyone know where Hamish bought that pin stripe kilt and jacket?

I'm not sure about Hamish but Rocky at USAKilts does the suit kilts and you might want to check with Matt at the Tartan Museum.

What truly matters is what YOU think and feel. I wear the hat of choice for my personal reason. Not for what you may like to see.
Beret, Bowler, Fedora, Strawhat, Ballcap, Rallye, you name it. If I own it, when the notion avails itself, I don the topper that I want. Naturally, I choose to not go about looking garrish or off kilter (intentional pun).
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

This is my grey pinstripe suit from Howie at TFCK in Edinburgh, tailored in 2003:

I'm kind of amazed at how many people, those who desire to be accepted in a kilt, were ignorant enough to tell you not to wear a hat...

We're ignorant because we responded to a call for opinions? Wrong.

I think a bowler/derby would look best with a waistcoat and jacket, but in my mind they've always been hats worn with suits of one form or another. YMMV.
I've been trying to figure out how to fit a 1930s or 40s style fedora with my kilt. I wear a crushable felt fedora with the kilt all the time, with the brim snapped down in the back, but the up-snapped brim is giving me a bit more pause.
A homburg, now, would look great with a kilt suit with jacket and vest, and an Inverness cape, with a cane or umbrella. Sort of a Conrad Veidt-meets-kilt.
