As to comfort, where in South Carolina makes a big difference---is it in the coast, the Appalachian foothills, or downtown Columbia---whose summer temps can be infernal. I'd also suggest jacket without a vest.

Time of day? Church wedding? Indoors or out?

Best advice we've heard is to find out how the rest of the congregation will be dressing, and tailor your own outfit accordingly. After 5/6 pm you can safely go black-tie. During the day, I'd aim for a business-suit equivalent, unless you hear otherwise. For a wedding, Southerners generally will dress up more than down.

Then too, we have enough Scots and Scots-Irish heritage that your kilt should be appreciated!

Like clan chiefs and Scotty Thompson, I prefer to always wear a belt, waistcoat or no.

Don't wear a long tie with a Prince Charlie. With an Argyll - OK.

I found a store on eBay that sells a tuxedo vest and matching straight tie for $37, with shipping.

    http://stores.ebay.com/RoyaleClothing

I ordered the vest on Wednesday of last week and received it on Friday (shipped from CA to MO).

To start with, after trying it on, I must admit... it looks better without the belt (although it forced me to go digging through drawers looking for my sporran belt because I usually hang it with belt straps).

I like the look of the vest and long tie with the kilt and no jacket. At the very least, it will get me through the summer without having to find the $$ for a jacket.

Sorry, no pictures at the moment; but I'm headed to a wedding in a few weeks, so I should be able to get the wife to shoot a few then.
