I am not sure if the words will come out right, but the blue jean looking hemp with black leather just makes it look to... 'everyday' I guess you might say. To common. The typical uniform of day to day life, found on just about every person around me. Blue jeans, black leather belt. Something reddish or brownish for contrast would allow it to stand out in a crowd more. Make sense?

Your kilts are far to nice to just blend in with the common 'blah' and doldrums. Needs something to make it stand out and say "Hey, look at me!"
I'll play around with it some more...but you know a kilt isn't too common and people do take notice.
I have the richer dark brown leather as well and I'm looking at it, experimenting with contrasting stitching as well.
or do something along these lines

    Cheers
