I'm in for either 4 yards or 8 yards depending how wide the fabric is.

Woo-hoo, thanks, Mark. I suspect there are a number of us here who'd love the IOS but have it about 4th place on our wool must-have list.

This is rather interesting. I thought the Isle of Skye tartan was patented and the rights to produce this tartan were granted only to Lochcarron. The following is from the Scottish Tartans Authority..
Mrs Samios controls the rights to the production of this "Isle of Skye" district tartan through registration with the Patents Office and Lochcarron of Scotland has been appointed as the supplier of fabrics and woven accessories in this tartan.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Interestingly, Marton Mills offers it (Isle of Skye) in 16 oz. wool.

And I don't know why more people have not seen this item for sale in full wool for around $300 US http://scottishkilts.net/products/st...ched_kilt.html
Mark, did you order the IOS in the 13oz PV from F&K? There has been a lot of talk about a mystery 13oz pv out there in the past and all those leads have been shown to be quite a different product than the PV that is produed by Marton mills and used by so many kiltmakers here (and worn by so many members here).
I am sure that Gordon Kirkbright has a good idea of what to make, as he is no stranger to a locla kiltmaker in Vancouver that uses the same PV (and F&K wool). I am only leary, as there has been a lot of product identified as PV which is a completely different material than many as expecting. Just a heads up.
Thanks for the tip Steve. How did F&K's PV stack up next to the stuff you have seen from MM?

The IOS is a "private tartan" when you order it through MM and is therefore charged "a surcharge per meter". MM SHOULD (can't say for sure as I'm not the person who invented it) be paying a fee (% of each sale) to the creator of the tartan... that's why the charge the customer a surcharge, so that they pass that on to the creator.
Here's the problem... when you use mills that are outside the UK and don't follow the guidelines of the Scottish Tartans Authority, they may reproduce tartans WITHOUT paying royalties to the tartan's creator. Keep in mind that the STA isn't a government body with laws... think of them as the UN... they have the ability to make "suggestions", but no real power to enforce them.
Case in point... a few years ago, there were about 5 or 6 companies offering "Irish National Tartan" kilts in Acrylic and wool that was made in Pakistan. House of Edgar (who OWN the Irish National Tartan) caught wind of this and tried to stop those mills (in Pakistan) from producing the material. Since the mills didn't care about UK patent law or about the STA's rules, they continued to produce it (until HOE started going after the retailers here in the states and SWK struck up a deal to be the only Irish National "non - wool" dealer in the US).
Mills outside the UK can / do produce material without paying proper duty to the creator. They MAY pay the proper person the duty to have the "right" to weave the material, but this doesn't happen often. Please note that I'm not accusing any particular company of anything... just pointing out a loophole in the "system" as it stands today.

Thanks for that Rocky. That clears up a lot of things. I guess it it just like electronics or software, certain countries scoff at international law and rights to create a market place for their wares.
