Welcome to the gang from Burbank/Sun Valley CA!
Stillwater Kilts are perfect for a 'Dipping of the Toe' into the murky realm of Kilt Addiction, from which there is no return- or the bright land of Final Freedom and Male Emancipation from the Tyranny of Trousers" - Choose which Doctrine to embrace.
USA Kilts & Utilikilts are a modernized version of a kilt, not made of tartan but solid colors, Pockets instead of Sporran etc.great for casual wear.
Even with the Tartans, most folk have no idea as to Kilt Protocol, so you can get away with practically anything (unless attending a genuine Celtic/Highland formal event). Kilt with T-shirt, Menzies Tartan with Stewart Fly Plaid (ugh!) Kilt with sneakers, Sandals, Work Boots etc. It's the 21st Cent. in a non-celtic country (USA) set your own tone/fashion statement.
Oddly enough, unlike most first timers being a bit nervous, donning the Kilt was like a shot of Testosterone for me - like I grew an extra pair. I went stomping off to a formal BBQ in my Blackwatch. Then butched it up at Ralphs Supermarket in my USAK the next day. It felt totally natural-and comfy- No sniggers, or snide comments. A big hit at the BBQ, and "great Kilt" at Ralphs from a guy sweating in coveralls, and applause from the women in the tobacco store. Enjoy!

Welcome from West Virginia!
FYI, the folks here helped me tremendously when I had a question on my first tartan kilt (should be a Father's Day gift!).
