Victoria BC Kilt Kamp Kilt Night

I can't find the post where I announced the details of our Kilt Night that will be held in conjunction with Kilt Kamp 2007 so I'll post them again.

When: Friday 22 June 2007

Where: The Fernwood Inn
1300 Gladstone Ave.
Victoria, BC
(That's right across the street from Freedom Kilts.)

Time: Dinner with the attendees of Kilt Kamp. Starting at 7:00pm
Everyone can order from the normal menu.

Music: Kitangas - Local Celtic/Folk/Rock
We'll be passing the hat to pay for the band instead of charging a cover.

Come on guys, this is the opportunity for those of you on the west coast to meet Barb Tewksbury.
Good food, drinks, and we've arranged with the band to keep the music down to a level where conversations don't have to be shouted.

I'm in. Not taking the kiltmaking course, although I'll be seeking Barb's autograph on my copy of The Art of Kiltmaking Looking forward to the other workshops. It should be a supremely enjoyable four days in what looks to be a wonderful place with some wonderful people.

The U.S. State Dept. finally issued me a passport (what were they thinking?) after only twelve-and-a-half weeks of processing my application. Plane tickets, motel reservations, etc. already arranged.

Now all I need is a good bicycle rental shop in order to while away (or, pedal away) any unscheduled hours. Think I should try this "riding in a kilt" thing, or not? (No XMarks polls, please!)

You can pedal away, or there are also scooter rentals that are becoming popular in Victoria.

w2f, what kind of bike are you looking for? Road, commuter, or something else?
Casper, those scooters give me the wilis! Picture large packs of young, happy tourists, swerving all over the road - I give them a wide berth, or try to pass them as quickly as I can! Actually, they're a lot of fun, as long as they're ridden with some common sense.

What?! You mean bikes come in casual, hillwalker, camo, and "tank" models, too?

Let's see... I'll bring some cycling clothes, less cycling shoes. So, Yes, to hardtail mountain bikes, hybrids, or old Schwinn Varsities - you know, something with a rack, a few gear ratios, platform pedals, and really good brakes. Will even take indexed shifters. I ride a frame about 54 cms.

No, to tricycles, recumbents, beach cruisers, bikes with suspension systems, clipless pedals, really skinny tires, GPS systems and such, or that weigh less than 20-25 pounds. (Unless it's a tandem, furnished with a "stoker" who is cute, athletic, smart, funny, happy, and female.)

My aim is to tour Victoria during the days, working around any of the planned workshops and tours of the Kilt Kamp. A simple bike for a simple man.

As if you needed reminding, I WILL BE THERE! I'm coming over on Friday morning. I've got the creative juices flowing to contribute to the entertainment. As I said before, if you need anything picked up or tracked down, give me a shout. This jones is as bad as any kilt order!! 16 days to go!

Even though Victoria has all the hallmarks of civilization,(McDonald's, 7-11, Starbucks) we are actually a small town. From the shop it is just a little over a mile to water in almost every direction. Even old decrepit me can walk from the shop to downtown 1.1mi. in less than 30 min. And that includes stopping for a coffee on one block, and a fresh bagel on the next.

Too bad you have a thing against 'bent bikes. I have a long wheel base, under seat steering aluminum "Infinity" at the house. Gear ratio from 18.5" to 115". 64 gears. I chickened out when I hit 85mph on level ground drafting behind a semi.

Bikes are everywhere here and I'm sure we can find you something in a coaster brake, wicker basket, streamers from the handlebars & balloon tired kind of bike.

For those who still haven't found lodging I still have one sofa bed, a guest room across the street and a chunk of floor under the shop layout table free.

OUCH! Not exactly a "thing against." I'm up for a spin on your machine, if you'll allow it.

Kilted on a "wedgie" seems problematic enough, but kilted on a 'bent has got to be impossible.

w2f, I've got a bike that would probably work for you as well, unless you prefer to rent one a little newer. We can let you know some good scenic routes too.
