I have heard frequently that a child's kilt is generally made with the closing on the left, mainly so it can be sold to either a boy or a girl.(only 1 kind of stock to keep)

If I were making one myself for a child, I would distinguish it specifically on the right for a boy, and the left for a girl.

    Just my preference.

kids kilts as shown here and the next picture have the apron opening on left. But it looks like the lad has kilt pin on right.

If I was making one for a boy though - I would make it so it opened to the right.

As a general comment-you see many women wearing mens kilts (open right) I have never seen a man wear a ladies kilt (Open Left)

It used to be the case that children of both sexes wore dresses. Alistar Cook who did the letter from America on the radio had a photograph of himself in a dress.

Certainly up until the Great War young boys would be in gowns, and were 'breeched'
only when they were old enough to dress and undress themselves - which for some might be quite old.

If the kilt is regarded as a traditional garment, then it might be as well to try to keep that tradition - but such things are not known in these more ignorant days and you could have some clown shouting at a poor wee tot that he was wearing girls clothes.
