Gordon dress, Royal Stewart, and Black Watch are the most common tartans. They can usually be found in most fabric stores.
I say make him a kilt. He'll love you for it! I have a few of the Sportkilt cotton flannels, and they are what I put on after work, after showering...what ever. The flannel is so comfortable. I would never wear them out anywhere, but they get the most wear of all my kilts. Scott
