I own a regulation doublet with Inverness flaps. I like it because, as someone else said, it does stand out a bit more in the sea of Prince Charlies at Scottish functions.

I'm rather partial to the "Brian Baru" style jacket, myself, though if you're cutting down a tail coat, you've got to go with what you've got.

I read somewhere that the Rugulation Doublet is a better option for larger men, as the flaps help to hide the waistline somewhat. Also if your going to really dress up with a plaid and dirk etc. the Regulation Doublet would look better (in fact Thompson in 'So you're going to wear the kilt' says he hates to see a plaid being worn with a Prince Charlie). I'm hoping to get myself a Regulation Doublet in the new year as I'm a larger man, prefer gaunlet style cuffs to the straight buttons and want to really go to town on the plaid, dirk, long hair sporran etc, etc,
The Kilt is my delight !

Looking at the pictures I would have to go with the doublet personally. But for $600 I think I would have to make one myself! (I've made a kilt already...how hard can a doublet be? )

My choice every time would be a Sheriffmuir doublet. You can wear it with a jabot to very formal events or over a Jacobean-type shirt and it looks great for daytime or less formal do's. It also has the advantage of accommodating an expanding waistline as it is worn open, just fastened at the top and looks great with its gauntlet cuffs and tashes (Inverness flaps someone called them). Also you can enhance it with a waistcoat if you wish and it looks even more impressive. It really is a very versatile all round jacket, much more useful than a PC or a regulation doublet.
