'Working' Kilt

My weekend projects typically result in some very dirty and on occasion stained clothes. Does anyone have any recommendations in looking for a kilt for this type of use? I realize that Utilikilt has their Working kilt, but I think that I am looking for something more like my Stillwater Economy kilt in denim. That is something tough and at a cost that is not going to break my heart if it gets stained, snagged.

R Kilts makes kilts in denim and hemp reasonably inexpensively, and they're made to measure... an advantage, in my book, over Utilikilt's off-the-peg approach. Also, Freedom Kilts makes some nice work kilts in heavy weight fabrics, including some stuff that is from the same mill as Carhardt's fabrics.

RKilts also offer kilt aprons. The Black Watch often wore canvas overaprons as late as WWI.

3 good options I think:

-A really cheap kilt:
Advantage: because they're cheap you won't burst into tears when the kilt get dirty or even damaged.
Downside: the fabric can be flimsy, kilt not always well made.

-A sturdy work kilt (UK, FK, R-Kilt etc.):
Advantage: Sturdy, well made, handy pockets, made for the job.
Downside: uhm....none?

-A kilt apron (WPG, R-Kilts):
Advantage: cheap, can wear any kilt underneath, takes 1 minute to put on/off.
Downside: still be careful what you do.

Robin has a solid point with the pockets. Depending upon what type of work you plan on doing kilted you may need tools. Utilikilt Workman's has nice pockets and loops for tools. RKilt and Freedom Kilt have tool pockets as well, but ones that you can ask to have customized to need. If its a true work kilt its gonna have some signs of work on it.

I've three Utilikilt Workman's and I'd venture to say they'd outlive dozens of inexpensive kilts and/or aprons.

I prefer value.

Remember, in the marketplace you can have any two of price, quality, or service.

I wouldn't worry too much about staining. A Black UK, RK, Union Kilt hids a multitude of sins. I have worn a kilt doing plumbing, carpentry, electrical work. The only thing I don't do is paint, and I keep an old pair of jeans for that. The only one of my kilts that I have managed to stain is the carmel duc (Carhardt) UK, but it is a really light color to begin with, and has seen the most action work wise.

Tell me about how the Utilikilt fabric holds up after washing. Do these need to be ironed out? Does the fabric pucker like denim does?

Utilikilts will need to be ironed to keep the pleats looking neat. The Workmans are quite rugged though and are designed for hard work.

Similar to denim, they start to look "worked", which I find appealing, especially since, unlike denim jeans, they don't have knees or crotches to wear out.
