Shriner,
For my wedding, we wanted something simple that wasn't terribly feminine and fit the whole Scottish/Irish theme.
We found galvanized pails for, I believe, $.99 each at Target. We took them to our florist, along with a roll of 2" wide Campbell tartan ribbon and had her make arrangements to match Dana's bouquet using the pails and the ribbon. This was mostly a lot of smaller flowers, like wild flowers, with thistle and heather.
I think the end result turned out well, and they ended up costing us most of $50 for the 10 tables. (I don't know exactly what she charged for them, but the total florist bill was $350 and that included two bouquets, arrangements for the mums and my dad, and the 10 centerpieces.) Oh, and then another $15 or so for the tartan ribbon - the roll cost $23, but we had ribbon left over that we used for other things.
Here is how they turned out. First image is a close-up of one of them. The guy with the handlebars is my da and the man on the left is my best friend's da (pretty much a surrogate one to me, as far as I'm concerned)...

Second image shows how they looked set out on the tables before the food was served. Here, the arrangements are modeled by my best man and his parents...

There's a picture of the centerpieces we used at this year's Burns Supper in this thread:

The thistle and California Poppy were made of silk and were the most expensive items. Without them you would still have a nice centerpiece.
