    Tartan and diced hose

I wonder if any of my fellow X-Markers could recommend a knitter of tartan hose, preferably one who uses wool/nylon blend yarns. In my list of links I have Kenneth Short, Kilkeel Knitwear (who has yet to return any of my phone messages or to reply my e-mail messages), Krafty Knits at www.kilt-socks.co.uk (website seems to be down), and House of Scotland. Any additional knitter information would be most welcome. If one is to invest in a pricey pair of formal hose, one should do ones's research!

The Tartan Thistle in Washington State:

I own a pair of their tartan hose -- they are quite good, and well worth the price.

    http://www.cuillinn.com/kilts.html -- Also highly recommended.

    Cheers,

    Todd

Kenneth Short is excellent although pricey at around £100 a pair.

    Here is a photo.

They are really only for formal evening wear and then with one of the doublets.

I really like the look of the tartan hose, I'm just not ready yet spend the cost of a Stillwater Heavyweight for a single pair of socks...still they look really smart!

    Phil, art thou a Galbraith?

    Cheers

How did you guess - I suppose the kilt gave it away. I was at Culcreuch castle in Fintry a couple of weeks ago which was the seat of the Galbraiths. It is a really impressive place and well worth a visit although they seem to survive mostly on the wedding trade nowadays. The last Galbraith chief seemingly wasn't too good with money and lost the place! It seems he also indulged in hamesucken (Scots legal term for attacking someone in their own home) and probably had to leave in a hurry. I believe he ended up in Ulster so he would have been well suited there.

Thanks, Todd. I had Cuillin's page, but never noticed Tartan Thistle had them. I ordered my third set of pipes from the shop years ago. On my fourth set and holding.

I am trying to get the funds together myself for a pair of Argyle hose, and have been talking with Diane, who is Arlen's fiance. She has been very helpful and great to talk to and deal with. The hose you would get would be completely custom.

Beware...I know several kilties, myself included, who have had bad luck with Higgins' hose...even after following their "care and feeding" instructions...
