Keep in mind that the same tartan can look rather different depending on the mill that produces it. So if you look at a photo of, say, the Hunting Stewart tartan on Linda Clifford's page and she's got a photo of a swatch from Strathmore, it's not going to necessarily reflect what a kilt purchased from Frugal Corner would look like. The only way to see that would be for Frugal Corner to have photos of the actual cloth they use on their web site.
If you go here to our gift shop's cloth page, you'll note that we provide hyperlinks to availability lists for all of the woolen mills that we order cloth from:
 http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/material.html

So if you are looking to order cloth from Ingles Buchan in 9 oz spring weight, you can see photos of their actual cloth. And then you can check the availability lists of Lochcarron's 10 oz range and Strathmore's 11 oz range and see how that same tartan compares. You may find you like the looks of one better than the other.

Of course, the *best* way to compare is to request samples be sent to you!

 Aye,
 Matt

That is my fear, and I've already requested samples. Unfortunately, he can not supply them. This is a little frustrating, since I wouldn't know exactly what I'm ordering. Having the reviews of others certainly helps, but only for a few of the tartans.

I see that you list the Black Watch and the Grant Hunting separately. They are actually the same tartan (if it is the current Black Watch tartan ie. not the small sett). Is this because you just want customers to know they are the same, or are they different in some way, like one being in Ancient colours and the other being in Modern colours? Just curious.

That is a Grant Hunting, not the Grant Hunting. The "official" Hunting tartan used by the Grant clan is the same as the Black Watch (also used as a Hunting tartan by clan Munro, and as the tartan of clan Campbell).

The one you picture is a Grant Hunting tartan from the 1819 Key Pattern Book of tartan weaving firm Wilsons of Bannockburn. It's not known where they obtained the pattern or why they called it Grant Hunting, but the design is very similar to their "Regent" tartan, which was later renamed MacLaren.

In any case, this tartan is still in production today, and can be found in The House of Edgar's "Old and Rare" line of medium weight kilt cloth. I outfitted a whole family in it last year. They chose it because:
 a) they wanted a Grant tartan
 b) they didn't want a red tartan
 c) they didn't want to be confused with Campbells!

Here's a pic of (some) of the family that I made the kilts for:
 http://kilts.albanach.org/james_family.jpg
(the guy in the non-matching kilt is a friend of the fam's whose kilt I did not make).

RL and Robin..thanks for the pictures.
Mark..I actually like that version of the Grant Hunting you have.
May I make a suggestion to you? I'm finding it very difficult to decide which tartan to choose from you, mainly because your site is lacking photo's of them.
Can you create clickable links (like you did for the Grant Hunting) for each of your tartans? Because they're computer generated, obviously they're not going to match exactly, but it sure would be better than going in without a clue. I really think it would be a wise decision, and ultimately give you more sales.

I'll be honest...I'm really considering buying my next kilt from you, but it really concerns me that you don't have pictures of your tartans available.
