Kilted fishing

I love to fish in kilts, saves on waders. But... the water is far too cold on The Gallatin, The Big Blackfoot, The Madison, or The Yellowstone. The reason some of us wear the kilt might just disappear in water like that!!!

I think at some point I just got used to the cold water. It never really gets warm in any of the rivers near me. But I certainly wouldn't venture out into near frozen water except for ice fishing.

Arlen, What I want to know is how often you get nibbled in your kilt while fishing? Watch out for the turtles

Honestly, I've never had any nibbles, but I did get a leech stuck to my leg once. It didn't really hurt and I knew enough to just let it drop off when it was ready, but it sure was a shock.

If you get back this way, come up to north Idaho - we have a few streams here and just across the line in Montana where you can have a multi-species day - Cutthroat, Rainbow, Brown, and if you're lucky a Bull trout to finish things off!

That sounds fantastic. From what I've heard the fishing all over Idaho is pretty good, but I'd really like to try up north.

Oregon is a great place for fishing. I caught a few very nice lunches while I was there. And my fiance done all of her fishing in short shorts and sandals. Not a set of waders in sight!

Just want to go on the record about this "we don't need no steenking waders" concept. I've been in rivers in SE Minnesota in August without waders...I actually forgot them...brought everything else but forgot to throw the wader bag in the car. August is the time when the locals will tell you that it's already gotten too warm and the trout aren't there...BUT...

...it was still cold enough that I realized that I was beginning to exhibit signs of hypothermia after a while. It was sort of subtle because I was concentrating on the fishing and not my state of being but I realized that i was slowing down and that I could very well have made one or more of those little errors in judgement that could have resulted in my getting seriously hurt. I got out and walked back to camp to warm up.

As long as the water temperature is lower than 98.6, it's cooling off your body. If you're only in for a short time, that's one thing but if you're on a major expedition, you could very well get hypothermic and it does creep up on you. Please be careful.

Don't worry, I'm rarely out in cold water for longer than an hour. I may not like to fish in waders, but I do make sure to take care of myself. Felt-soled boots and cornstarch and all.

Now if only I could find a way to bring a portable sauna with me it would complete the fishing experience.

Funny story about fishing... My kids and I were fishing about a week and a half ago (I was kilted ofc). And my daughter hooked the back of my kilt on her backswing. When she cast forward, it pretty much answered "The Question" for everyone at the lake that day.
