Right over Left or Left over Right?

    Greetings to All,

I am a newbie to kilts, and have already infected my # 2 son with the addiction!

My good lady wife found some kilts in the Deseret Industries store in Los Angeles, and one was of a size to fit our son. It's tagged from Edinburgh Woolen Mills in Black Watch tartan, for the grand price of $4.

The only problem, maybe is that it is designed to be worn left over right, so the front apron is open on the wearers left side. Can kilts be worn either way, or did we find a girlie kilt for my son? (It would be a quick fix to change it over if so).

    Thanks for the advice.

    Cheers,

    Marshal Moroni

Well, normally the kilt ought to close on the right - one that closes on the left is usually a woman's skirt. If it's no big deal to change, I'd say go ahead and do it.

I got a baby kilt for my 2YO son and it was backwards as well. Apparently children and women wear them that way but my son wanted one like mine so I reversed it. All I had to do was buttonhole the left side under the buckle and fringe the other apron to reverse it. Took me all of about 5 minutes.

Kid's kilts are usually open-on-the-left? I never knew - my kilt when I was two opened on the right.

Women and children are traditionally expected to be dressed by someone else, so the buttons and other fasteners are arranged to be convienent for a right handed person facing them.

Geoffrey Kiltmaker's catalogue has all their kilts (mens, womens, children's) opening on the rights, even their skirts.

    For whatever that's worth.

It probabably all depends on the manufacturer. Like dress shirts - All men's shirts have buttons on the right and most women's shirts have buttons on the left but some are made with them on the right.

    Hi,

'Edinburgh Woollen Mills', here in the UK, is a chain of High Street shops selling mainly women's clothing, but each branch has a small men's section (usually tucked away at the back!). Over the years I have bought many a good pullover and brushed-cotton shirt from them, but I have yet to see any men's kilts on the rails. Women's tartan skirts yes, but men's kilts no.

From your description, I'd say you have a skirt there - maybe a kilted skirt, but a skirt nonetheless. Time to get the needle and thread out!!

    Kilted Ones,

Thanks for all the info, I'll get my son and his wife the instructions and we will get it sorted out.

I appreciate getting straight info, particularly helpful was Ham.
