Anyone have any experience with the low-fare Scottish airline, flyglobespan?
Globespan is a well known travel agency based in the Glasgow area and have been organising visits to Canada for Scots for many years, chartering other airlines for their flights. Within the past two or three years they have formed their own ailrine FlyGlobespan and procured their own aircraft and flight crew. They are recruiting like mad - I know several pilots who have recently joined them. Flyglobespan have got very big very quickly, extending their business to include flights from several English airports, offering package holidays to Florida, and offering inbound trips to Scotland and England from Canada and USA. I haven't tried them myself but have seen a lot of favourable reviews on aviation forums. The only negative would appear to be that because they are still awaiting delivery of aircraft and have a lot of crews undergoing conversion training from other types of aircraft they often sub-contract flights to foreign airlines where some of the flight attendants speak little or no English. However this is a much better option than cancelling the flights.

FlyGlobespan are starting direct flights to Madeira from Edinburgh in November this year - handy if you have a timeshare there. I believe their headquarters is actually in Edinburgh and they are a long established and reputable company. I applied(unsuccessfully) for a job there a few years ago. Their flights seem to be very much "no-frills" and well priced as a result.

Some day. I've been to all over Europe, but never had the opportunity to visit in Scotland.

Ann & I do still own our timeshare week in Madeira but nowadays we use it for exchanges to UK destinations as Madeira would no longer suit Ann's now limited mobility. Though I can highly commend Madeira as a holiday destination if you are physically fit.

    10th anniversary

Hopefully my wife isn't reading the forum...

Our first date was the opening night of Braveheart in Boulder, CO. I promised that we would visit Scotland. Now I need to make good.

Our 10th wedding anniversary is next September. If we have a good season, I'm going to buy tickets for her this Christmas.

OK, so for North America they only fly out of 3 US cities & 3 Canadian cities & their prices vary from city to city & date of travel, but $128 w/ tax to fly Economy from Boston to Glasgow??? Unbelievable!

    Smile

I first went to scotland when I was in the scouts on a camping trip there is a big camping site just out of glasgow many years ago (did that twice).

Then I returned for a castle holiday with friends in south scotland (near gretna green) did tours in the area (recommend that to anybody!!)

Then I ended up working for more than a year and a half in aberdeen, edinburgh and leith. I went back again a number of years later for another job I had to aberdeen but only for short visits over the course of a year.

Both me and the wife are off there for a summer!!!!!! holiday in september.. can wait..I even convinced my wife islay is a nice island ;) had nothing to do with th trade thereapon ;)

If I had my way I would be living there ;)

Thanks, Phil! That was quite an eye-opener, especially the numerous complaints about flyglobespan.com in the comments section. Sounds like they've got quite a few problems to iron out. I think I'll stick with British Air which has a direct flight from Phoenix to London; then I'll probably take a train ride up to Scotland.

BA used to be a top airline but they've lost a lot of their prestige in recent years since they abandoned most of their international direct flights from Scotland, including all their transatlantic services, surrendered many of their European routes to other operators, and stopped flying Concorde. In the past year or two they have had a lot of issues with the unions and a poor record for cancelling flights. Not an airline I'd choose to fly with, but each to their own.
