    David,

Since you had your cloth woven by Peter MacDonald, I would assume he had the cloth woven in Wilsons of Bannockburn colors. (Wilsons was a weaving firm that started around 1765 that developed standardized colors for their cloth sometime during the last quarter of the eighteenth century -- Peter MacDonald has done extensive research into this firm and has recreated their colors).

The colors are typically a bit softer than our so-called "modern" colors, but not nearly as light as our "ancient" colors. I think if someone were looking for something close to these shades off the shelf, the "muted" colors from House of Edgar come closest. Although Strathmore is offering four tartans in 13 oz weight in Wilson of Bannockburn colors. See:

Also, if anyone wants their tartan woven in Wilson's colors, I can have those custom woven for them (the cost of a box pleated kilt made from custom woven cloth is $480 for the average sized gent).

    Aye,
    Matt

Thie kilt I am wearing in this picture is in 16 oz Ancient Lamont tartan by Lochcarron, the kilt is not a box pleat, but I did buy it from Matt at the museum. It is a little lighter in color than the tartan in David's kilt.

    Jim,

I'm working up an order with Matt. Looks like I'll be getting the Lamont Ancient 16 oz as well. I really like David's kilt, but It is a bit too pricey at the moment. The 'muted' color version is also very nice, but it comes in 13 oz.

If you had it to do over, Jim, would you have stayed with the Ancient or gone with the Modern?
