    That would look much better, to my eye. Something most people do not think of, but it has worked for me is going into the tartan shops in your area, and seing if they have anything on consignment, I was able to find a Harris Tweed Argyle in my size for $40.00,so you never know what is out there.

    The jacket looks like a very candidate for a kilt jacket conversion. It is very similar to one I had done. Take a look at these before and after pictures. :

    Thanks again for all your constructive comments, encouragement and links. I think I probably will have a go at it. It's that first drastic sawing off that might need a wee dram of Dutch courage. No, maybe best do it sober.
    Meanwhile, I've won a pale green Argyle jacket, my size, on eBay, for £25 (!!!)
    It's turning out to be a super week.
