Flash pattern
Howdy,
Anyone got a pattern to make flashes? I bought an "unidentified" kilt, and I'm having trouble matching flashes for it.
Thanks in advance.

Check this thread http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...t=hose+flashes
There are others as well, just do a search for hose flashes in the DIY forum.

Once the lengths are known, it is easy to make them out of plastic grosgrain ribbon and elastic. Fabric is more complicated mostly due to the fact that most fabrics unravel fairly easily once cut.
I use a cotton or wool woven ribbon for most of mine now. I make the ends into "ruffs" (unraveled much like the ones the Tartan Museum carries that wrap around the leg and tie).

Flashes don't have to match. Just pick out the main colour in the kilt and get that colour flashes

Here's how I made a set of flashes to match one of my Dad's kilts.
Just try it with some solid colour material that matches the kilt.
(And you can substitute the glue for wondaweb.)

How often does the inner apron show? I was contemplating taken a couple of chunks out of that to make flashes/belt loops.
Kinda' off topic, but this avoids starting another thread.

If the kilt fits, the belt loops REALLY are NOT necessary. Actually, the kilts I make myself do not have them.
The underapron does not "show," but is important in how a kilt wears.
In your case, the EASIEST thing to do is to use black or tan (depending upon hose colors) grosgrain ribbon in 1.5 inches to make simple flashes. It is a easy start and, being that they are plastic, just use a small flame to "singe"(sp?) the cut edges.
I made my first ones in a matter of minutes.
