There was a half-page article on this very subject in yesterday's Sunday Post (Scottish newspaper), but it gave no more information than the BBC's piece. In fact, it was very similarly worded and probably taken from a news agency report - Reuters or its ilk. This is a link to the Sunday Post's on-line version:

What we need is 'detail'. Detail as to how we are, or are going to be, affected by this legislation. Interestingly, only Scotland has been mentioned thus far as being affected - what about us sporran wearers in other parts of the United Kingdom? Surely this has to be a national matter, not regional.

Sporran Police
I found the place on the Scottish Executive site which deals with this and where you can find the full text of the law. It was mildly reassuring that the site indicates that the law is aimed mainly at taxidermists.

My head tells me that there is no way that the average kilt/sporran-wearer in the street is going to be challenged or checked over this. The cost alone would be prohibitive and the public outcry would be huge.
The law applies only to Scotland, although as with all EU laws, it is likely to arrive in England & Wales soon !

In a 12 mile stretch of road close to my house about 50 deer are harvested per year in all four seasons by trucks and cars. I've never heard of anyone here cited for illegal hunting. I wonder if the new regulations consider foreign deer protected or perhaps illegal aliens.

By the way, for the purists out there, the Pygmy Nauga is a sub-species of the Nauga family, but the fur is much denser and a little lighter - much nicer in my opinion.
I think wild nauga is permitted. It's when you raise them in hair nets to get the faux alligator naugahyde that the activists reach apoplexy.
We tend to agree, this is getting a tad wamboozled. Nightstalkers all around men, until the synthetic activist groups gain strength. As for that kilt check, I wonder what kind of written procedures the border guards have, that would be a primo sticky in the off-topic section.....

When those lawmakers are sitting in the chambers making laws, are they seated on nauga hide or pig skin?
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

Looks like we'll all be wearing plastic sporrans before long!
Just make sure that they're recyclable.

You think this law is ridiculous, but only because you havent been paying attention. Give it time, and pretty soon threads even talking about seal skin sporrans will be banned at X Marks.
Heck, I'll probably have this post erased and a PM in my inbox just for reminding people where the original of this phrase came from.
They can have my sporran when they pry it from my cold, dead crotch!
