Because pipes are a musical instrument. Much more craftsmanship goes into making a musical instrument that actually plays well.
You can not play tunes and scales on sporrans.

Pipebear:
There are several men and 1 lady in our pipeband alone that didn't start on the pipes until their 50's. Give it a go!

I feel inspired to give this a go. Now if I just had a clue as to what everyone was talking about in the rest of this thread.

Nothing more confusing to a band than a drummer that can pipe, or a piper that can drum!! Keeps em guessing!

Thanks for all your helpful comments, folks. I'll certainly take a look at the McCallum and Dunbar pipes.

For what it's worth, I just picked up my Dunbar p-3s yesterday, and I'm off, with my son (who is a much more advanced piper) to the Ohio Scottish Arts School after the games on Saturday.
See you all on the other side!

True story:
I'm standing next to Drummie at the Games when a fellow starts chatting me up, saying he'd always wanted to play the pipes, but hadn't even an ounce of musical talent. In a voice sure to be overheard, I replied "Well, as you haven't any musical talent, have you ever considered becoming a Drum Major?"

Take a look at woodwind instrument prices and they are in line. I just paid over $6,000 for a used English horn, and that was a bargain.

I am not sure if we should drop the price of our pakistani pipes to around $79 and sell them as novelties or raise the price to $650 and advertise them as rare pakistani pipes.
Of course we could just not carry them at all and maybe form a partnership with some fine producers of excellent pipes that are custom made to order and cost $1200 - $5000 sell 1 or 2 a year, retire at 50 move to Florida
(all the above has been said tongue in cheek)

If, having carefully followed this discussion, you think that $149.99 pipes will meet your needs, then by all means buy them. As The Frugal Corner is generous enough to be a sponsor of XMarks, I strongly encourage you to consider purchasing from them. According to all of the feedback I've heard on this forum, they really do strive to provide excellent customer service, and they offer comparable pipes for about $15 to $25 less than the site you mentioned.
