Kilt wearers face a sporran licence
Sunday, June 24, 2007
Kilt wearers could find themselves facing prosecution if they do not have a licence for sporrans made from animals, it emerged.
Under new legislation which has been introduced in Scotland people wearing any part of a protected animal need to obtain a licence.
The laws have been drawn up to protect endangered species like badgers and otters, whose fur used to be favoured by sporran makers.

The legislation applies to animals killed after 1994.
People who apply for a licence must prove that the animal was killed lawfully before they will be able to get one.
The maximum penalties are a £5,000 fine and six months in prison.
A spokesman for the Scottish Executive however stressed that the law was not aimed at sporran wearers.
He said: "This legislation is not about sporrans, it is about protecting endangered wildlife. It has been brought in to comply with EU law. Legally produced items will not be affected."
The rules also apply to other vulnerable animals like deer, wildcats, hedgehogs, bats, lynx, moles, seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises and also cover fishing flies made from animal hair.

popped this email aff tae Elaine Murray my MSP...
Dear Ms. Murray,
As a kilt and sporran wearer I am concerned about the new Scottish legislation I read about on the BBC webpage. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6234290.stm
This subject has caused quite a stir in the international kilt wearing community… see this thread on this kilt wearers website to see what I mean… http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=28575
Could you provide more details about this law?
Are kilt wearers to destroy our old sporrans made of seal fur? What about sporrans made of other types of fur?
Where do we apply for a “Sporran License”?
How do we obtain “proof” that the sporran we purchased years ago from our local kilt shop was made with “legally killed” seal fur?
How will this law be enforced? Will police be expected to stop people on the street and ask for their sporran license?’
Thank you for your guidance on this matter.

"Faux Fur"? Who said "Faux Fur"? I must report this oversight! Why should the poor old Faux herds have to make the ultimate sacrifice, that's what I want to know. Now that the Naugas get off Scott -free (pardon the pun, I have no self discipline), everyone is now wanting Faux fur instead. What did the poor old Faux's ever do to you?
I DO hope the Scottish Govt. realises it's blatant omission in forgetting to ban Faux Fur AND Nauga Hyde together. Lovely creatures like those should be allowed Freedom by Stillwater instead of being Kilt (Sorry, I'm now out of control)
"S.O.S.-SPARE OUR SPORRANS!" Should be our battle cry! You go tell 'em Hamish!
Cheers.

I don't know, the last time I tried to wear my full mask moose sporran I threw my back out.
It might be a good idea to ban those.

Where a law is "aimed," just like a firearm, has no bearing on where it eventually "strikes." Just like collateral damage in war, much damage can result from a confusing, poorly written statute that gets prostituted later for some other environmental/political purpose by the agency charged with its enforcement. The Law of Unintended Consequences is still in force, and just because someone now says they don't intend the law to cover sporrans does not mean someone else will not interpret it differently.
I am especially suspicious of the statements that noone seems to know exactly what is intended, but it's only to bring the law in line with the European Union. There you have your legal system being run by someone not answerable to your own citizens.
