Well dont wear a sporran myself but could see how it could pose a problem if you had old sporrans and no way to verify how you came to have them.I can understand them wanting to keep a eye on endanged species and keep them protected .But be serious is the government really wanting to create a whole new section and hire people to inspect sporrans thats just rediculous the best most folks could possibly do is a reciept and thats if they didnt toss it after a amount of time.Quess you guys better start a file for sporran reciepts and licenses treat it like the taxes .

It might be a good idea to ban those.
Glassman,
Another one to avoid is the full mask woolly mammoth sporran (very rare). You have to wear a 500 lb counter weight on the back of your kilt belt, and when walking you keep tripping over the trunk. Plus when you turn to talk to someone you can run them through with the tusks.

reply frae Ms Murray...
Dear Mr Wellen
I'm sorry to say I know nothing about this other than hearing a clip on last
night's news on Radio Scotland. I gather its EU legislation which may be
translated into UK / Scots law. Will try to find out more

I find it disturbing that even MSPs are in the dark about it.
Government by stealth is not healthy.

Elaine Murray sent me this yesterday...
I read through all the documents (an' maire tae...) not yin mention o' sporrans....
it seems quite clear (when ya read it) that this is aimed a' ILLEGALLY killed animals... (poachin'!) and the use o' these animals either in products (like sporrans- but no mentioned) or taxidermied....and it doesnae seem tae apply tae any product purchased frae a shop...
ai think the BBC has acted like a tabloid rag oan this yin....
Dear Mr Wellen
I have been sent the attached by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre. There is no direct menstion of sporrans but presumably the assumption made by the BBC is that the regulations in regard to possession of specimens or parts of endangered species might apply to certain sporrans

Subject: Enquiry on sporrans
Dear Elaine Murray MSP,
Thank you for your email. You asked which regulations were being referred to in a recent news story on sporran wearers requiring a licence.
The regulations referred to are The Conservation (Natural Habitats &c) Amendment (Scotland) Regulations 2007.
Information on the Executive website on European Protected Species (EPS) specimen licensing can be accessed using the following link
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/En...ats/16330/4827
Within this, ‘Annex IV(a) Specimen Licence’ provides some additional information on licences to possess EPS specimens:
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Environment/Wildlife-Habitats/16330/Specimen
There is also a link to the explanatory guidance document:
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Environment/Wildlife-Habitats/16330/legislation
I hope this will be of assistance
Yours sincerely

Welcome to our world, McClef.
Our sealskin ban is looking better in the comparison, even then there is a Native American use exception (sporrans would not qualify per se) where the EU proposal doesn't seem to allow for cultural practices.
Pretty soon, the only place one can have full mask or fur dress sporrans will be Canada. I'm pretty sure I'd get slapped with blood by PETA protesters if I wore one around San Francisco, so the point is geopolitically moot for me.

I'd be angry at you too. Wearing a sporran made of a tasty animal around is just showing off.

We Texans run into similar problems on those occasions when we wear our Longhorn steer full mask sporrans. The tips of the horns tend to be sharper than mammoth tusks, even without the artificial sharpening which is routinely provided by most sporran makers.
Both types of sporrans certainly have their advantages, however -- especially when it's time to refill one's glass from the beverage table . . .
