Good suggestion! Hey, wait! Turns out I did just that, some thirty three years, two months and thirteen days ago.

Awesome thread! Makes me homesick as well for California, especially those burritos. You can't get good Mexican food here in Germany ><

I first visited San Diego when my ship, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) made port call there in 1989. Being a sailor, and hanging out with other sailors, mostly what I saw that visit were the sort of businesses that cater to sailors -- bars, mostly featuring scantily clad women.
A couple of years later, my (then) girlfriend got a job at the Little Globe Theater as a carpenter, and we spent the summer in San Diego. I mostly remember it being hot and dry... but the flea market rocked my small, self-centered world.
This was a great series, and I find myself thinking about doing "a walking tour of Flagstaff." Hmm. Maybe when my new AmeriKilt arrives, I'll combine a review and a tour of our small town. Hmm.

Your photo tour brings back memories! I loved being in San Diego when I was based at NAS North Island. I would get up on a Sunday morning, if I did not have duty, and go walkabout for a good part of the day. It was so nice to see familiar sights again! Lots of good memories! Nice to see the suspension bridge again. Have been over that a few times .

Thanks. Hey, we lived in Huntington Beach for a short while back in the `90s just as the O.C. went bankrupt. Not a bad place (nice beach and pier), and no disrespect to your `hood and all, but I'd rather be in Germany.

Thanks. Yep, CalMex is the best food on earth. When Carol and I finally retire to other less frantic parts of this earth, we're going to miss the snot outta our food here. Glad you enjoyed the tour.

I didn't know Hazard went THAT far back ..
I'm trying to remember some of the funnier named places in Hillcrest.
I delivered an original artwork to my friends Uncle Doug and Aunt Bob a few years back (pre-kilted days).
Carrying paintings on amtrak is not a good idea ...

John Basilone certainly died a hero, though it must have been tragic for his young bride Lena to lose him so soon after their marriage.
Good eye, Alex. I tried to get that photo crisp enough to read the plaque's inscription, but I wasn't satisfied with my efforts. Glad to hear you eagle-eyed types could make it out in spite of the photo's quality.

Yes, Hazard in its evolving iterations have been major players in the construction business in this part of the world for a long time.
As far as humorously named places, well, Hillcrest is, as you probably know, the Gayest `hood south of San Francisco's Mission District. Its eclecticism is a big part of why we live here; those without a thick skin and a generous sense of humor need not apply.
Thanks again one and all.
