I don't know how randomly made they were, but, other than the Sobieski Stuart brothers, I can't think of any tartans that were sold using as many outright lies as this one does. I welcome corrections, since my knowledge of fraudulent tartans is limited.
By the way, "Charles Edward Stuart (soi-disant Charles, Prince of Wales, and later Charles III) took Clementina Walkinshaw (1720-1802) as his mistress
from 1752-1760 (and treated her abominably). They had one daughter,
Charlotte, Duchess of Albany (1753-1789), whom Charles also considered
with derision, and would not allow to marry.
She became the mistress of the French prince, Ferdinand Maximilien Meriadec of Rohan, archbishop of Bordeaux. Their children were Aglae Charlotte (b. 1780), Marie Victoire (b.
1782) and Charles Edward (1784-1854), the last styling himself 'Count
Roehenstart.'"

Mr Maxwell-Stuart is nowhere listed among them.
