I think you could go horizontal with it. I think it will look fine.

I should think a chisel would be a wonderful kilt pin design for a wood worker.
From a distance it would look like a dirk or sword until people got closer and then see it was something much more personal.

You could also consider using something like crossed hammers behind the plane to visually create the circle.
