The material -- best Scottish sheepswool, what else? Thick, warm, and seemingly (?). Today there is also the soft version in cotton and wool / poly blend.

Wow. I hadn't realized how rusty my German had gotten.

Not half as rusty as their understanding of Kilt.

My question is how did they ever see that kilts had pleats in the first place?

Now, now. Scottish mercinaries worked all over Europe in preceding centuries, including several Germanic principalities.

    Smile

I think what ccga3359 was getting at was that if one were to FACE Scottish regiments, one would never see their backsides and therefore one would be unaware that a kilt had pleats....plus if the Germans in WW1 saw "the ladies from hell" they were probably too busy running the other way to notice the finer elements of a kilt

Ozone got it, and I being English is one of the few times you'll hear me compliment the Scot's.

I sort of collect WW1 photos of kilted troops. I've seen several from the German side to know that they had seen the back of kilts. It's a very sad thing, the cost of war.

In one battle, the Scots' charge broke clean through the German lines into a valley. Unfortunately nobody had a plan for that, and they were massacred.

On a happier note, have a look at that photo again. (I have the full size copy of it here.) See the second soldier in the foreground, not the background guy ducking the rifle butt of the guy in front. Okay, the second soldier has a sgian dhu. While this is only a photo of training in the late '30s, it is the only clear picture of a soldier in combat dress wearing a sgian dhu. Cool, isn't it.

Herminator....not being American, you missed my little nod to a long-running ad campaign: "silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!" Believe it or not, here's a web link regarding this ad campaign: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trix_Rabbit

Anyway, back on topic: What I dont understand is that there is WEALTH of information on proper kilt making, including this site. So how did kilt.de make their error in the first place?!? I did notice a mail link on their site, perhaps a German-writing person from here could clue them in to what is actually a kilt?
