Seriously though, those "kilts"(and I use the term lightly) are quite horrible. Perhaps if they made some sort of effort to line up the sett in their pleats it wouldn't look so bad but I'd rather wear pants than those things.

There is? That school must be out. The ancestors of the Celts, for the most part, came up the Atlantic shoreline from the Iberian peninsula, where they had been waiting out the last Ice Age, according to Y chromosome DNA. Theirs is haplogroup R1b. The ancestors of the Germans tended to be in the Balkans at that time. Their haplogroup is I. See http://www.roperld.com/HomoSapienEvents.htm

whilst I personally like the image, and agree with the sentiment in the original post, this picture actually reminds me of a previously stated "don't"....That is, "don't mix your tartans". These rather manly-looking men (I use the term loosely) are wearing checked shirts with their kilts (we Aussies refer to these shirts as "flanellette" or "flanno's") - and isn't that considered a fashion faux pas?
Or am I just advertising my ignorance? ;)

I do like the picture as well, and I give props to Hilfiger for trying to target to a specific crowd. Unfortuantely Hilfiger is known for their shirts that look like these flannel shirts. I think if you just took away the flannel shirts and even gave them plain black or white shirts no logo or anything the picture would look a thousand times better, but then the picture would be advertising nothing. I agree that is in bad taste to combine these two, but oh well, at least they tried.

I don't know, the ad works for me. I remember, when I first saw it years ago, that I was mildly disappointed that they weren't really selling kilts (which is a confusing advertising strategy). But then, I'm not sure I want to have my kilt associated with a TH lifestyle, I'm sort of diametrically opposite to that.

I think they were trying to draw a sort of spiritual equivalence between the kilt and their flannel shirts, don't you?

I don't know, there's something really poignant about the picture. Something really sad has happened to the guy being held, like maybe the guy's puppy just died or something like ash scattering ceremony. I like its composition and its challenge to stereotypes. All pretty brave work considering what it is actually selling.
What it looks like it's selling, to me, is a kilt camaraderie that you can't get except by things like combat. It looks like it gets rid of all sexual confusion without being androgynous. BUT IT'S NOT SELLING KILTS!!! It's a really weird ad.

All I see is a bunch of scruffy louts in dresses.
How do we know they are wearing kilts ?
I see no non-pleated apron , no belt , no sporran , no straps ,
No Kilt !!!
If T. Hilfiger want to show boys in girls clothes , he could have had the decency have them wearing Burberry 'tartan' skirts .

That's because they're wearing KILTs and they are wearing them the right way around. Those items would be visible from the other view.
Are you joking? I don't get your point.
