Question How many pleats does a kilt make

    Good day all,
Last month I bought some reduced green wool fabric from my local fabric store. I really liked the material (it reminded me of a blanket I had while I was an Air Cadet). I was hoping that there would be enough for a knife pleated kilt, but when I got to the counter there was only 1.75 meters left. I bought it and thought that I might try a box pleated kilt. So I did. I was ok with the result, it went into the closet and I have not thought about it till this last week while looking over some threads here on the forum.
I was only able to squeezed out 5 wide box pleats, now my question is does this still qualify as a box pleated kilt?
It is still a wearable piece of clothing, which I plan on using and enjoying.
    Thanks
    Sara

I think Matt has said he generally puts in 8-10, but I suppose five would be a respectable casual kilt.

There is a 200+ year old box pleated kilt in our museum that only has 6 pleats. It was made for about a 36" or so waist, if I recall correctly. That is the fewest amount of pleats I have ever seen used, historically.

I've made box pleated kilts for clients with as few as six pleats. Usually this is either because they were thin men, or I was working with a larger than normal sett repeat.

Personally, I've never made a kilt with fewer than 6 box pleats, but I suppose on a very thin person, 5 may look adequate.

    Aye,
    Matt
