    Floods in the UK

Are there any of our members suffering the flooding conditions present in the UK at this time?

Whilst I am residing in what is supposed to be one of the wettest parts of the Kingdom, and have had very little rain,my son's farm near Gloucester(England) is underwater.Havest was due to start anyday----so who knows what is going to happen there. He tells me that there are many people worse off than him and it is going to get worse before it gets better.Fingers crossed for them all.

We caught the heavy rain last month but only the garage was flooded to a couple of inches. Fortunately the house was OK. We are on slightly elevated land but the city of Hull (10 miles away) and parts of East Yorkshire to the east were (and still are) very badly affected. My heart goes out to the many who have been flooded.

Down here in Sussex on the south coast of England we have no floods to speak of. This is surprising since we have had what seems like constant rain for months and, one day last week we had over 3" of rain in the one day - it was incredible. The garden is a washout this year - I just hope I can get the lawns back in order for the 2008 Storrington Gathering next June.

As with everyone else who is not directly affected by the waters, I feel so much for those thousands who have been, and still are. This morning, whole counties have lost power and fresh water supplies.

Also this morning, the Government has announced that it still proposes to build hundreds of thousands more houses on the country's flood plains! What goes on in their tiny minds?

Glad to hear you're OK Hamish, I was thinking of you as I watched the news here. It's pretty bad in some parts.

Well down the coast in Hampshire we have been very, very lucky no floods to speak of, but the continous rain every day, is enough to get you down, but having said that, l feel so sorry for all the people that have been affected, so l count myself lucky, although it is raining today & has not stopped since early this morning.
Some of the roads are flooded in the forest, & the campsites are a washout, the annual Steam Engine rally started on Friday but had to be closed yesterday because everything got stuck in the mud.

No bad floods in my area either but travelling through to the Midlands would be difficult.

Am at the Royal Welsh Show this week and it's been somewhat muddy today but the River Wye which flows only a couple of hundred yards from the showground hasn't risen, yet anyway.

Have ordered a dress ysgrepan from Wales Tartan Centre's stall and it will be ready for collection on Wednesday!

We are basking in glorious sunshine in Scotland just now which makes a change. It is usually the other way round with England complaining about droughts and hosepipe bans. As Hamish says building more houses in flood-prone areas is sheer madness and you can only feel sorry for all the families left homeless. Thank God it is nothing like what happened in New Orleans.

We live on higher ground in Oxfordshire so we have had no flooding despite the heavy rain. The fact that some roads were been closed due to floods or log jammed with traffic because they were the only roads open has stopped us getting to the theatre (on Friday) and a National Trust estate (on Sunday). Tonight however we had a great time at an open air concert - Appalachian clog dancing in a village in the heart of the English countryside accompanied by an excellent local band, believe it or not. I was very tempted to get my kilt swinging to the toe tapping rhythms but had to be content to clap along. By some miracle it did not rain but a couple of miles away, the level of water in the Thames was continuing to rise ...
