If you are not in the wedding party then I say Semi Formal. You don't see many guests at weddings in tuxedos do you?

Semi formal. Of all the formal weddings I've seen (as a piper, I've seen lots), nobody outside of the immediate wedding party goes formal. Often as not, even then they change clothes before the reception.

It's not the kilt per se, but everything else you're wearing (sometimes thin, cheap kilt hose can be a bargain on several different levels). If they have a lick of sense, the reception will be indoors in the air conditioning, and just not wearing a wool bonnet will go a long way to keeping you cool. As soon as you're out the door afterwards, strip off your jacket like all the other guys.

if its in the 90's I would skip the vest. I was just at a wedding in SC it was 95, I went Kilt, cotton hose, dress shirt. It was pretty comfortable.

That's not semi-formal, that's casual. Unless it's an explicitly casual beach or garden wedding, you might give someone the impression that either you're ignorant of the basics of etiquette, or worse, simply lack sufficient respect for your hosts to dress appropriately. While I'd wear a kilt anywhere I needed to wear clothes, I'd be very uncomfortable if I were the only guy in the room without a coat or a tie.

I had a similar situation, I wore Hose, Kilt Thompson/a tan tartan,Sporran, Belt, Short sleeved Tan shirt & Fly Plaid. Was cool enough yet the fly plaid added a 'formal' touch.

Semi-formal. In my humble opinion this means formal sporan if you have one and Argyll jacket. Casual would be day jacket and westcote.

Where would a Jacobite shirt be placed on the scale of casual to formal?
