FINALLY..... I am making an X-Kilt for myself
I washed the fabric this weekend, cut it out this morning and ironed/turned up the selvedge to hem it. It's gonna be out of "predator" camouflage. Thanks for the material, way2fractious!
I still have no digital camera aside from the awful one in my phone, so no pics, but I'm going to make it using techniques completely different from my instructions, anyway. Stll, when it's done, I will have a narrow-apron, 3-inch box pleated, close-with-buttons-and velcro contemporary kilt.....ergo, an X-Kilt as far as I'm concerned.
I'll be doing this in a mess of 60 and 90 minute sessions so this is going to take a while, I think. But that's OK.
Oh, maybe I'll snap a few pics along the way, if y'all can tolerate junky cellphone pictures.
I think Alan's Personal Contemporary Kilt #2 will be a full-width apron, 5 yard knife pleated kilt out of digicamo....material also care of way2fractious. I like Richards digicamo knockaround kilt a lot, so I'll just shamelessly copy the idea; makes sense since he gave me the fabric. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
I plan to make that one a backpacking and hiking kilt, as well as general knockaround.

And when this X-Kilt is done, your Predator Camo X-Kilt and TimC's digicamo X-Kilt are next.
Though Lord knows precisely when that will take place.

OK, two mornings, and about two hours and change into it. uh.... I'm not counting the time it took to wash the stuff, OK?
Morning 1...45 minutes...sweep the living room floor (we have hardwood floors), lay out the fabric, measure, draw a chalk line, and cut it out. Decide how big the hem will be, and iron it over to hide the not-so-great selvedge....
Morning 2; 90 minutes... Hem the bottom...Eyeball, fold over, and iron down and sew down two lines of stitching along the right hand edge of the over-apron. Mentally re-check my measurements. Reconfirm with tape that me rumpside is in fact 48 inches. Measure over-apron width and chalk in fold-over points for left side. Iron in crease in left side of over-apron. Sew two lines of stitching down the full length of the left side of the over-apron.... Take framing square and draw a chalk line that's at right angle to the hemline, right next to the bottom of the over-apron. Fold in the deep first, forward-facing fold of the first box pleat. Iron it in. Mark with chalk and then fold in the rest of the first two box pleats...iron them down. Slap it on the sewing machine and stitch down the all of the first two box pleats, below the fell.
I didn't stitch down the first two box pleats above the fell, 'cause they'll be tapered. I do that, later.
Dang, that was a lot for 90 minutes, wasn't it?

Oh, this X-Kilt will have a 9 inch apron, 'cause I've learned that I like aprons to either be full-width or really narrow and forget the "in-between" of the X-Kilt instructions. Not that Tartan Hikers and Thomec's X-Kilts don't look great (as well as all those other X-Kilts you all have made) , but I find that I tend to go one way or the other....narrow or full width. That's a personal thing.
I'm A-shaping the over-apron about an inch on each side, so 2 inches total. That's a lot for an apron this narrow, I think, but Piper Georges X-Kilt has an A-shaped apron and I liked it.
It will have 13, 3-inch box pleats that wrap around my hips. It will close with a button on the inside, left and either with velcro for the over apron, or possibly with black polypro webbing and some swif-clips for the right side of the over apron. I don't think I'll make the cargo pockets. I designed them and knocked out a few for the X-Kilt instructions, but I'm not keen on them personally. I just wear a ten-dollar Jansport fanny pack, 'round the frontside as a contemporary sporran.

11 pleats done. I measured this morning...take ten minutes and checked and it looks like my pleats are a scoooch wider than 3 inches, 'cause it's going to take 12 and 1/2 pleats rather than 13 to get the measurement right. Looks like I might be making my over-apron a bit narrower!
Oh, it's been about 2, maybe 2 1/4 more hours of work into it to get me to here.
What's left? probably 2 more pleats, trimming the under-apron, wiastband. Under-apron-strip, and velcro.

I got in another hours work this morning, after balancing some checkbooks. I put in two more box pleats and did half of my pleat tapers. I'll have to do one side of one pleat over again, as the inside pleat fold got turned over on itself. Not bad for an hour!
