Kilt Pin Question?
Ok, this may be a dumb question, but here goes...
I know where the kilt pin goes, just from keeping my eyes open. However, what is the kilt pin pinning? Is it just decoration, or does it go through multiple layers to hold something together?
Pardon my newbiness...

I believe, and I am sure others will correct me if I am mistaken, that the kilt pin is used as a weight on the outer apron. It help hold the apron down in a sudden breeze. I am pretty sure that you don't put it through all the layers, as it could possibly rip out and that would be bad.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but I figured I'd ask before I ended up as an entry in Kilt dos and don'ts.

That's about the half of it.
Kilt pin serves as a weight, and foremost decoration. My 13oz. Tank has enough weight to stay down in a sudden breeze by itself, but the kilt pin helps. And most certainly just keep it on your outer apron. You're right in that pinning all the way through could cause a tear out. Of course you should be cautious anyways that your kilt pin doesn't catch on anything that might cause it to pull anyways.
Good Luck! and remember the oddest things have been made into kilt pins. Not just the usual stuff found online from a celtic/scottish kit retailer.

In addition to being careful not to catch it on anything, you may want to "reinforce" the attachment in some way so that you don't lose the pin.
