    Getting into Highland sports

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I think I have seen a few people who compete in highland games (i.e. hammer throw, caber toss). I would like to try my hand at it and maybe compete in a game or two. Where can I find info about organizations in/around Augusta, GA-Aiken, SC area?

    Thanks,

    Darin

    Darin,

    Try NASGA

I too am planning to start competing this coming year, The New World Celts is going to sponsor me at the games.

I know there is a HG at Stone Mountain, Ga.

I'm thinking I might write up a tutorial, share it with Alan H and a few others who compete here and maybe we can get a sticky put up.

Darin, try these links for Highland games in our area: http://www.shagagain.com and
http://www.thessaaa.org . These as well as NASGA are great sources for the Highland Games.

NASGA is a good starting point for getting information.

You'll want to be getting some exercise...hit the weight room for a couple weeks, and practice a few times before getting out there in your first Games. Some of the events come fairly naturally. I mean, to get GOOD is one thing, but to fling the weight in some of the events isn't a big deal.

For example, the weight over the bar is reasonably intuitive. Same for hammer. but the weights for distance are ANY-thing but intuitive and take a lot of practice. Stone is somewhere in between. Caber, to my mind, is not terribly intuitive. So get/make some practice gear, and watch google videos and youtube videos, and if you can possibly work out a few times with guys that have done this for a while, DO it.

If someone could point me to a group in Utah, I would love to start training for the heavy events especially.

    Jordanjm,

I know Hill AFB puts on a highland game sometime during the year there. We just moved from there. I think there is a rocky mountain highland association. Ogden seems to have a decent Scottish population, so check around there.

I have a power lifting background, so i just need to get back into shape a little. We just had a baby so I haven't been to the gym at all. The strength part comes back pretty fast.
    Thanks for all the links.
