You know everybody has done very well in this thread that VERY easily could have slid into some nasty differences of opinions.
I think that we have all given Braveheart88 some food for thought.
Might I suggest we let this thread rest until Braveheart88 himself decides to update us on his (and his Mom's) choice.
Cheers

I've never had trouble with knives, I even carried a short ka-bar for a while, always on my belt and often even with my kilt, Police are fairly slack on the knife laws in Portland, I never had much interest in a sgian dubh, but some are, I've always liked a functional knife, one that I can cut with(anything from string and plastic, to wood) and throw well, so a sgian dubh was never for me, the ka-bar worked well, since I learned to throw with it. but my point is I've never had trouble with knives.

I had a problem a couple of years ago at the Spokane Indians Ball Game. The Spokane Scottish Dancers were a demo group before the game. After the demo a policeman asked me to put the 'knife' in my 'purse'. He said some folks were worried that I was carrying a weapon!
I seldom wear it now. Never to schools or public events. While I'm hiking I might take it along; and always to the Spokane Highland Games.

I was about to add my sixpennyworth here, Jamie, but I am more than happy to do as you wisely suggest.

Hi all,
That's the reason I bought a dummy sgian dhu when I bought my first kilt outfit.
Even with that many people asked me why I carry a knife in my sock.
An airport would be the last place I would put that object on me. In fact a kilt outfit would not very practical there.

is there any website that sells "sgian don'ts", or do I have to make my own? not that i'm opposed to a little project, i'm just not a very experienced woodworker. the bottle opener sounds grand...

Let's see...
In Arizona there are a few places you can't take weapons (schools, posted properties, etc.) Other than that, the only illegal thing is concealing a non-pocket knife. Other than that there are no laws on carrying knives, no matter what style, and what size. I can walk down the street with an 18" Bowie knife on my belt and it's perfectly legal (and probably wouldn't be noticed).
As far as "sqian don'ts", I'll have to dig into my woodshop and see what I can come up with. This could be an interesting project.
Fake knives for people who can't carry a real one, but still want an authentic look.
Hmmm...

Or maybe just for someone who likes to keep a bottle opener handy!
Ooooh, or a sgian-handled t-body corkscrew! (I'm getting all silly again.)

Yes, you are, because you don't need a cork screw to open a Laphroaig bottle.
However, I see a business opportunity here.

Search for past threads involving "sgian don't" and "sgian brew". There are a few sources around.
