Idea for a new type of sgian don't
I've been tossing this idea around in my head for a little while, and I've realized I don't have the particular talents or expertise needed to pull this off. So, I hereby pass this idea out there to all of you in hopes someone can use it. All I ask is that if anyone knows where to get something like this, let me know. If you like my idea and want to make them to sell, send me one.
That being said, here's the idea: A pen in a sgian dubh. I was thinking pretty much a carved wooden piece that looks like a sgian dubh in a sheath, but when you pull it apart you have a quality pen in the handle. You know, something that might take Cross or Parker refills. Preferably Parker for me, as Cross has gone downhill in the last 15 or so years. I got the idea from looking at sgian brews, and thinking, "I don't drink, so why in the world would I carry one of those?" It would give those of us who don't drink something functional to carry at those times when a real sgian isn't appropriate.

Shouldn't be too hard. The upper part is attached to the hilt, the bottom part goes into a sheathe. Could be a little awkward to use, though...

I like the idea, Erisianmonkey, and yes, ChromeScholar, it would be awkward to use..... IF the pen was attached to the "sgian" handle.
However, if the entire Sgian Don't was in fact just a sheath for the pen... so that both the "handle" and the "blade" were hollowed out sufficiently for a pen to fit inside, that would work nicely! One could pull the "sgian don't" from one's sock, pull the two pieces apart, and viola! A pen is produced with which to sign that autograph (give the girl your cellphone number, etc).
It's an idea which has merit! I just need time to do something about it - and that I don't have much of.

Make sure to post a picture if you make it. I was thinking if it leaked though it would make a real mess of your kilt hose.

I had a similar idea recently (that, not having any spare time at all at the moment, have been unable to realize). I was doing a crossword on a train, and between use, I tucked my pen in my sock, in roughly sgian position.
Inspired by the thought that I rarely need to stab or cut anything when kilted, but often do crosswords, my thought was to make a pencil case in the shape of a sgian. One could probably be made that would fit two or three pens or pencils, although three might be pushing it in terms of the durability of the item.

You could always do the "geek" thing and put it in a pocket protector

Hmm... a very cool idea.
A pen or a pencil case sgian...

That's a good idea, although the idea of having the Sgian Dubh as a pencil / pen case is even better and I think more flexible.
I've been wondering about incorporating a high power LED torch as a useful item for the non-drinkers.

Yep, both the pen case idea, & Rab's concept of a torch would be a hit I think.

Dare I say it? "The pen is mightier than the sword"
