From these great pictures, I like it pleated to the yellow stripe. In a box pleat I love the way the white flashes when you walk. Don't know if that would happen in a knife pleated kilt but I still prefer pleated to the yellow stripe.

Next up, a 16 oz XMTS military box pleat with yellow stripes centered. I hope it meets the needs of a certain, very demanding, zepplin captain. I pray it coordinates well with that zepplin captain hat he wears. Hmmm, maybe a hot pink sash to go with it...

Sorry for joining this discussion a bit late, but I was mentioning to Matt Newsome (who'll be making a box-pleat kilt for me out of the latest batch of XMTS tartan cloth) that I was sure what stripe to pleat to, & I thought you might be interested in his reply -

"If you want my personal reccomendation, if I were making the kilt for myself, I'd pleat to alternate lines (effectively meaning pleat to the sett in a box pleat).

Here's why. I've noticed that F&K's cloth really doesn't want to hold a sharp pleat. Try as I may, I can get nothing better than a soft pleat to hold in it. Other kiltmakers have expressed the same concerns. I had hoped that this would be better in their 16 oz cloth, but I just completed a kilt in this new weight, and I'm having the same issue.

A soft pleat is not neccesarily a bad thing. In fact, Bob Martin reccomends it in his All About Your Kilt. However, in a four yard box pleated kilt, a soft pleat looks much better if the pleats are on the wider side.

So, if you pleat to alternate stripes, this allows you to increase the pleat width by 50%. This will give you much nicer hanging pleats, in my opinion.

I figure Matt's the expert, so I said, "Make it sew!"

Thanks, RR. I'm glad you passed on Matt's feedback on the "soft" creasing.

Because a military box pleat has two layers of fabric in the turnback, it always has a "soft" crease anyway. The F&K material may translate into an even "softer" crease in this MBP. We'll see. This may be a case where vertical pleat basting makes sense in order to get the best crease possible.

hrmmmm...I'm most interested in a knife pleat for my first tank, as opposed to a box pleat. (though a box pleat is on my wish list as well)

Has anybody mentioned knife pleated to the yellow? Would it be possible to knife pleat to alternating stripes....white/yellow/white...etc?

I was just thinking that pleated to the white stripe might just be tooo much white, but I'm hoping that at least the yellow is enough of a vertical element to avoid what Rocky refers to as "lawnchair butt."
    cloves,

I think the wide white stripe would look very nice with a regular knife pleat, it would be very striking. I just think that the wide white stripe wouldn't quite work as well with the military box pleat, in that you wouldn't appreciate the pleating style. In my opinion anyway.

    Cheers

Correction, X Marks products have their own announcements. There is no Forum available for discussion of such products, just updates about Xmarks branded stuff.

Jonesing for a Xmarks shirt like the one pictured HERE.
Just haven't heard anything since it's initial posting on 5/31.

I'll post on the suggestions board about making an Xmarks Tartan discussion area under DIY
