Is MacKenzie considered universal?

I have McKenzie ancestry and have recently acquired a budget kilt in McKenzie tartan. I was surprised to find this tartan so readily available in a casual kilt but as others have said there are a lot of septs entitled to wear McKenzie and it also has military connections. It is not quite so commonly seen here in Scotland compared to, for example, Black Watch or Royal Stewart, but is one of the commoner tartans which more people tend to instantly recognise.

One guy was on here about 2 years ago forbidding everyone from wearing the McKenzie Tartan , I wear it because my Great Grandfather was a sergeant in the Ross-shire buffs, and served in India in the mid late 1800s the Buffs wore the McKenzie Tartan and I sometimes wear a Dress Mckenzie 8 yard from Hendersons of Stirling.

I too am a MacKenzie. My grandmother was born a MacKenzie. Right now I own a cheap basic MacKenzie kilt that i got for about 40 bucks, but I too intend on buying the Weathered MacKenzie here soon. I think it looks nice.

As for the original question, I do think that the MacKenzie has kind of become a universal tartan, but like any tartan, i think you should buy what you like, and just treat whatever you decide to buy with respect.

You MAY want to be careful wearing it if it's pleated to the stripe and you happen to be visiting a place where a regiment that itself wears that tartan in that fashion is based (such as Vancouver BC where the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada are located), otherwise you might have some fast explaining to do (and you may wind up having to buy rounds of beverages).
