Ah the "shapless Irish peasants hat" and the British military ones aren't even based on an Irish hat
Can't say I particularly care what the British military ones are like. Caubeens are worn by pipers of the Óglaiġ na h-Éireann; the Irish Defence Forces, which makes it Irish enough for me.

Whether its an urban myth the story goes the English colonel of an Irish regiment wanted his men to wear some traditional Irish headgear "like the one in that picture" the picture happened to be of a Scottish immigrant

See my post above. The Irish Regiments borrowed heavily from the Scots when they started forming pipe bands in the late 19th century.

I have yet to find a hat I like to wear when kilted other than the driving cap I wear with everything else. Traditional kilted head wear always has a poofy ball or rosette or feather on it that just doesn't seem to sit right with me. They look great on all the pics I've seen of you guys, but I just get the feeling they'd look funny on me.

I know exactly what you mean. I always like the way they look in the pictures. But, i can't see any of those looking well on me. Especially with the stretched ears, just doesn't seem it would "look right." So, I too stick with driving hats and flat hats.

I would like to see you say that to any of the members of the RRS

Fair enough, try it and see.
