One thing to consider is that, in some areas, the appearance of having a knife is an issue by itself.

At games and events, you'll see judges wearing pens/pencils tucked in their socks. I think that looks pretty cool.

Okay Gordon, you have only yourself to blame for the assault I'm about to make on your eyes with this hideous drawing:

After looking back at your drawing, I'd think yeah, alignment pins would be good, but I'm too tired to go back and draw them as I've been up since yesterday. But the big question, since I know that the size of everything I have shown here is well within the realm of possibility, is just what the smeg do we do with all that wasted space in the sheath/blade area?

The only places I can think of are airports and government buildings. I avoid both like I avoid trousers. I think the whole point of a sgian don't is to have something to wear when the traditional look is called for but the blade itself is a no-go.

Court houses get twitchy about knives, too. I always try to avoid them.

I travel everywhere with a large metal clip sticking out the side of my pocket all the time. That's my 4 1/2" pocket knife. People see it all the time. If I was wearing a kilt, most times I have about 3 blades on me, so if it bothers people no one has said anything.

Erisian, I welcome the feedback. The wasted space in the sgian is always a problem, but on the sgian brews there is a ton of wasted space in the handle, so without the presence of a blade, what else would work there?

I had the idea of sewing leather into a knife-blade outline, but inserting 2 parker ballpoint pens into the leather whilst it was wet and moulding the leather to conform around the pens. Then, using more leather, make a collar around the top of the "sheath" area. Using still more leather, I'd then make a "cap" (in place of the Sgian's handle) for the pens, with the opening being shaped to slide over the collar of the lower portion. Still with me?? I hope so, 'cause I don't have the ability to draw piccies like other, more skilled members of the rabble.

Thus, wasted space would be kept to a minimum. If I was really really tricky, I could possibly make a torch or LED light that would fit inside the "handle" and shine out the top of the "handle" thru the "pommel".

All of this is hypothetical, of course, as I should be more concerned with writing my thesis.

I'd love to see any and all versions actually get made.

Here we are, back to the survival kit idea: fish hooks, sinkers, skin glue, wire saw etc would fill that space admirably. Ah yes: the survival sgian... just the thing for your next bushwalk. Or maybe the swiss army sgian... the possibilities are endless. And surprisingly practical.

Well Raptor, I've seen many of your glorious talents used on other sgians in other threads, sounds like a challenge for the resident Sgian DIYer.

So, that would be like a Scottish lightsaber?
