Question for anyone who can help
I was thinking of buying a kilt through the kilt store. Has anyone purchased from them before, and were you satisfied?
Being a first time kilt buyer...(other than a "Black Watch Phillabeg" for my living history group), I have loads of questions, but I'll leave it at this one for now.
Thanks,
J.T. Nelson

Hi,
I have used the kilt store on several occasions, and am a very satisfied customer. Their customer service department is excellent. I keep going back...

I haven't bought from them, but as a first time kilt buyer, may I recommend something like a Stillwater or USAKilt?
A smaller initial investment for an excellent product, AND you can always step up to the tank within a year!
Just my 2 cents, though. Get what YOU want!

I'd only point out that they are located in the UK and you very well could get nailed with import taxes in addition to the cost of the kilt and shipping. I've heard more positive about them than negative so I'm sure you will get a great product and service, but the fact that the taxes could add $50 or more to the kilt is enough to keep me from buying from them.
Counter offer, How about one of our resident kilt makers?
Freedom Kilts
Matt Newsome
Barbara Tewksberry
USA Kilts
as well as
Frugal Corners and Stillwater if you don't have to have a TANK

Thanks guys, thanks for the replies. It makes me feel better about the purchase from that source. John, I have a friend who has a "nightstalker" kilt from stillwater. He's very happy with it. It does seem more logical to go with one of the two you mentioned. I'd get more use (daily/casual) out of them. I appreciate your recommendations too, as it shows your experience and willingness to help, that's what is great about xmarks folks. However, my heart is set on my Gunn Modern Formal kilt. And/or a Gunn Ancient Great kilt. Or maybe both....or maybe weathered....or maybe all three......or maybe.......
I better start saving....:-)

Aye, I was thinking about Matt Newsome, he is the man when it comes to tartan knowledge, and kilt making. And I didn't think about the import tax, etc. Great point. Money is an issue, so it may put me over the edge. I'll have to keep on researching.

Since a great kilt is essentially just a length of cloth, you might take a look and see if Celtic Croft (also one of our sponsors here) offers the tartan you want. They're in the USA, so no import duties on the cloth.

If money is an issue, look into The Scotland Yard, they have a time pay plan where you can order anything you want and pay $50.00/month ($75.00 down) until it's paid off. They carry Gunn Ancient, Gunn Modern, and Gunn Weathered tartans also. They are located in the USA.

Do they send goons to repossess your kilt if you miss a payment? I was not aware they offered payment plans. Now I will have to call them for more info.

If you want the Gunn Modern I know that USA Kilts has the Gunn Modern as well you could go to Canadian Casual Kilts as Peter has it as well. As someone who has kilts from each I can heartily recommend them both, my CCK and USAKilt are my daily wear kilts, my 16oz wool 8 yard kilts are worn, just not everyday. Take a look at USAKilts or Canadian Casual Kilts and you will get a made to measure kilt at a great price and they are both wonderful to work with.
