My avatar is the Northern Ireland flag. Its been banned since the 70's, though, as its considered a sign of the protestant loyalist community (my great grandfather came here from Armagh)
- 6 pointed star represents the 6 counties in the country
- Crown represents the monarchy
- The background is St. George's Cross (English flag)
- Red Hand of Ulster (since Northern Ireland occupies most of the Province of Ulster on the island).

Thanks, Casper! That's really interesting. I was particularly drawn to the 6 pointed star, as my wife is jewish. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Well I'm glad you figured out that you don't have to be Scottish to wear a kilt!
Here's a little local colour that you might not have heard of yet:

Mike,
First off a hearty welcome to you.
Glad you have found the board and I hope you enjoy your time here.
As for the festival that Edward mentioned.
Toddish is a member here from way back. He hasn't popped in for a while
but I think this would be a wonderful event to check out.

I've never read of the flag being "banned" per se, just that it does not have any official status of the flag of Northern Ireland.
BTW, there is another flag, which is sometimes referred to as the "Ulster-Scots" flag; a red saltire, combining the Crosses of St. Patrick & Andrew, with the six-pointed star and Red Hand of Ulster.
The St. Patrick's Cross is also making a comback in NI as well.
Regards,
Todd

Toddish aka Todd Wong. He is a regular at the kilts night and he is definitely a local celeb. He had been interviewed by CBC television, CBC radio, BBC Scotland and a German TV station. CBC Newsworld also did a special on his family which featured him in his fraser kilt.
He is a great friend as well. As side attending the monthly kilts night at Doolin's Irish Pub(Corner of Nelson and Granville) the first Thursday of every month, he is also an experience Dragon Boater. He coached our corporate team with great success and he led his team to a gold medal at the recent Dragon Boat meet at Vernon. I just did the Grouse Grind with him this morning. I am sore.

Thanks guys!
I had actually heard about Toddish, from the Wizard! ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I'd like to come out to some of these events, it's always fun meeting new people.
Just got back in from wearing a black UK workmans to a nightclub (that has a strict dress code, luckily, a friend of mine knows some of the people there, and they let me in), and aside from some people giving me some looks, nothing was said.
Definitely loving wearing out these kilts/mugs ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
