    Victory Resolved

Yesterday I was able to sit down the the CFO who is the "executive officer" of the agency, #2 in the pecking order. She's the lady who gave me the copy of the grievance policy. I brought her up to date on the CEO's response and asked if policy was to be followed so that I had a written response before returning to work kilted.

She and I have always had a good rapport and her response was to say that the CEO really is busy with bigger problems and he has, at least for now, dumped the entire dress code project. She acknowledged that flip flops, grubby and torn clothing was a bigger problem than my wearing kilts to work. She assured me that the CEO wasn't mad about the kilts but that there had been two "complaints."

She revealed that one client complained that there was no way to be sure if I was wearing anything under the kilt. Strangely that has never been an issue for the client with the ladies at the agency wearing skirts and dresses.

The other was a vague complaint that one of my clients just couldn't stand to look at me when I was kilted, that it was too embarrassing for them. Its not uncommon at all at a behavioral health agency to switch clients for various reasons (I don't want a lesbian therapist, I don't want an LDS therapist, I don't want a male therapist, etc.) so thats what they did.

I believe the later client has a diagnosis where the behavior of the disorder is such that nothing is ever right etc and complaining is the norm so that fits with the clients disorder.

The CFO understands that we're an agency who's clients come to us with various mental and behavior problems and that two such complaints in three years isn't much at all. And I reinforced the point that our agency stands for diversity, not prejudice, even with clients.

I also pointed out that it has been VERY difficult to explain to the many questioners why I'm in pants, not kilts, and that I've done all I could to avoid pointing fingers at management. Even earlier that day I'd run into a caseworker from Child Protective Services who's first response was, "Oh, its you. I didn't recognize you without your kilt."

Bottom line, she said there'll be no problems, even with the CEO, if I come to work kilted. She said it would not be a "sore spot/open wound" with the CEO as I'd been told.

So hey, this too has passed. Planning to kilt up for work next Tuesday.

And hey, maybe from time to time I'll show up in pants.

Special thanks to the mods for their patience and tolerance as this adventure has unfolded and evolved.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on reaching a suitable decision. Seems as if sense and sanity has finally prevailed.

Glad to hear it. This whole episode sounds like one of those silly bureaucratic pecking order things. Probably your kilt-wearing got lumped in with the real target cases (unprofessional dress) simply because it's unusual. It's very good that rationality and good sense won out in the end!
