I have a boonie hat thats what my dad calls it. The tag says it is a Cotton Nylon Outback hat. I purchased it at Gander Mountain, it has a soft all around brim, and a neck cord,a tightening for the size, and the best part is that there is a mesh Ring around the crown of the hat... than back to a solid top.. It is very comfortable and cooling,,, but ALL WAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN, .
When its hot and sunny out I don't care what i look like, its better to protect yourself than to look cool.
I recently purchased numerous all wide brim hats, and sun hats for my mother who had radiation treatments to her neck and face, and is not to be out in the sun without a brimmed hat.
I have numerous " Farmer Hats", Straw Hats - think Amish brim hats that I wear when working in the yard. I might look geeky while gardening wearing shorts, t-shirts and a large brimmed hat.

You know, there was a time (not so long ago, really) when no man would leave the house without a hat. I think it's that fact that got me to start wearing a hat when I went out, no matter what.
And while I'm on the subject, hat etiquette seems to be as much a relic as wearing hats. Keep your hat on indoors in public places (lobbys, etc), in public corridors, and outside. Take it off in private spaces. There's a lot more (ladies, which is a little complicated, elders, etc), but those are the basics.

Tilley not "Scottish" enough? Add you clan badge, plant badge, or even trail some black ribbons off the back of the brim. Problem fixed!

Since I shave my dome, I usually wear a hat. In the past it has been a Guiness ball cap. I also on occasion wear either a herringbone wool Irish styled hat, but it is very hot during the summer months. At this summers Potomac Celtic Festival, I opted for no hat with a lot of #70 sunscreen. I came through that one in good shape (no sunburned dome), but it was a bit inconvenient refreshing the sunblock several times during the day.

No hat etiquette. Tell me about it. I can't tell you the last time I was at an event where the national anthem was played that at least half the hat wearers didn't remove their hats. I guess the schools no longer teach how disrespectful this is.

Hat etiquette doesn't apply to Marines, ex-Marines, Formal Marines. We are so indoctrinated that the moment you go in a door, the hat comes off. And the reverse is true, out the door, hat on!
To a Marine, the hat is for outside wear ONLY! And I think that's right. It buggs me seeing hats worn inside.

James, have you seen the newest MC regs? The Commandant finally signed 'no hands in pockets', and no walking and talking on a cell phone into regulation, rather than just being 'understood'.
I love my hats, though I dont wear them all that often. I do wear them whenever I know I am going to be outside for any length of time. My current favorite is that wide brim hat, but I think I will be getting a Tilley soon enough.
