    Tank Definition

Forgive me if this question has been raised before. Many times in the forums a reference is made to kilts as tanks. I assume it refers only to the 'short' kilt and not the great kilt. How did this reference to a kilt as a tank come about? Thanks!

A 'TANK' is defined as an eight-yard, wool, hand-sewn, traditional kilt. ie., "It's built like a tank." (coined by Jimmy Carbomb c.2005)

Does it have to be hand sewn to be a tank?

Well since Jimmy made up the term, I guess it technically does. I think the jist was to describe a "traditional" full-weight wool kilt, as typically made by hand in Scotland (and by our talented kilt makers elsewhere.)

    Best regards,

    Jake

I wouldn't necessarily be so sure about the hand-sewing.

In Barb Tewksbury's book, she says sew everything by hand, and I'd guess kilts made by her are all hand sewn.

My 'tank' a 9-yard 16oz by Alex Scott of Aberdeen has machine sewn apron edges, waistband and belt loops, but I'm convinced it's a tank. Goodness knows it's heavy enough!

Rocky and Kelly at USAKilts produce the 'Premier' which they say is part machine sewn and part hand-sewn.

I think the real 'tank' criteria are 16oz or heavier wool, traditional styling, 8-yards+ of material, and knife pleats. You'll know when you wear one!

    Best regards
