Hey Ron- Any chance of some real photos, cause I agree the duluth illustrations, aren't very good.

Aye, maybe this weekend...with some readily identifiable "stuff" and a ruler.

Waist Pack Photos
Here you go James,
This is looking down into the back double pocket. That's an audo cassette in the back inside pocket. This pocket is lined with fuzzy stuff and has double zipper pulls. This pocket is closest to the body and not blocked by the flap. Its behind the flap.
This photo is the center pocket. It also has double zipper pulls. The flap covers this pocket. You're looking inside to the double pocket. The divider is mesh.
Here are the front pockets. Thats a side zip, nearly hidden pocket that the audio cassette is poking out of. I don't have a cell phone but was able to put a stick of BodyGlide in the cell phone pocket. That's a pen pocket next to it, but I was able to get a MagLite into the slot. The flap covers all. There is a company logo embroidered on the flap but its easily covered with either black Sharpie ink or a pin.
That's the Stillwater nylon sporran next to it.. There's no pocket in the flap on the Duluth Trading Waist Pack like there is on the Stillwater sporran.
I haven't field tested the Duluth Trading Waist Pack yet...just remember, it is smaller than they advertise in their catalog and on their website. For some, that might be good.
The backside has the wide and long belt loop, pretty much the same as the Stillwater sporran. The plastic D rings on the side and the nylon "belt" for the waist look pretty rinky dink. don't know if I'd trust anything valuable to hang from the D rings and I'm guessing the belt twists up easily. I'll wear a leather sporran strap with this, or wear it at my side on a belt.

More Photos
Found a hidden pocket on the back of the sporran/waist pack. That's my checkbook stuffed in there for size comparison.
The back belt loop is also fine for a sporran strap as shown.
Here's a front view. You can see that the logo is small and is a dark gray thread on the black nylon. The bottom half of the flap clip is adjustable for length depending on how full the sporran/waist pack is. Kind of a long reach to reclip it when wearing it though. I like the Stillwater sporran velcro better, easier and don't have to reach down. Probably less hassle if worn on the belt to one side -IF I can manage the snap with one hand.
The more I poke around with this thing, the better I like it. That hidden back pocket would certainly be very secure - a place to keep mad money.

A Total Bust
Finally, a month later, got around to testing the Duluth Trading sporran-like thingie. Wore it to work today.
It held what I needed all right but when I sat down to do paperwork in my lap - a necessity with DUI Screenings - it stuck out so far I had to push it to one side.
I also found that the zipper pulls disappeared into the side supports and were near impossible to retrieve with my fingers.
The flap latch thing involved manipulation where I couldn't see to get the buckle together...hard enough getting the hanging part vertical then plugging in the dangling part.
Overall, doable, but a pain. Traded it out for my SWK nightstalker sporran when I got home.

Finally came to your senses, eh? I guess we all try to push the edge a bit in one way or another.

In a commedy of errors, I have two nightstalker sporrans. This week-end, I am going to change the black tassels on one to brown.
Cause, I find that I am using it more and more, and others les and less. By exchanging the brown tassels for the black, It will (should) go with a brown belt and shoes.
I'll post some flix.

Having been kilted for more than fifty years I can say with some degree of confidence that the common sporran, no matter how plain or ornate, just doesn't get the job done. The sporran, an accesory with a practical purpose, has not evolved at all. It is still nothing more than a simple pouch. When I go out I need a place for my drivers licence, debit card, cash, cell phone, smokes, and 60 year old Zippo. A mere leather sack just doesn't get it done.

Go to Jerry's site - look at his Nightstalker nylon sporran (leather version promised soon) - order one (he has good prices!)
Try it and I think you'll change your tune.
There are also many other "functional" sporrans available also! Thorfinn, and Buzz Kidder come to mind and I just can't remember the others.
A sporran made for and by people who wear the kilt IS available!

Has anyone had a look at the Eddie Bauer Expedition Bag as a sporran?

I have a version that I have had for about 4 years. When I first saw it (before kilted) I knew it would be great for a sporran.
The only problem is that it can hold to much.
