Is X Marks the Scot a Clan?

Quite the interesting thread. It looks like it struck a lot of people the right way. The motto and plant sound good. Just curious but why do clans have clan plants? i admit to being ignorant of the ins and outs of clan symbols. What about having a X marks clan animal or mineral? We could have the mallard (the most common type of duck) or maybe a coyote for an animal. Simular to the dandelion idea, an animal that is found in many different areas and environments. Can't think of a good mineral.
