Battle Cry Suggestion: CHARGE!!
As in, buy more kilts, or forward into the fray to wear kilts on the job, or where's the nearest pub...multi-uses and meanings.
Unless someone can say in Latin "smouldering plastic charge card."
And, Opus the penguin always relaxed in a field of dandelions. Maybe we can get Berke Breathed, his artist, to draw up Opus in a kilt laying in a field of dandelions....

I missed this discussion, as I was VERY busy the last couple weeks (vacation and work).
Ron, interestingly, "Visa" means "I Charged" and is based on "Veni Vidi Vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered), Julius Caesar, converted into "Veni, Vedi, Visa" ("I came, I saw, I charged).
I like the dandelion badge and the "By choice, not blood" slogan.
The clan chief, well THAT WOULD BE HANK (duh!), as he rules (and OWNS) the roost here, and does a good job at it.
I would agree that we are EFFECTIVELY a "clan" (see signature), but we COULD NOT be a "true" Scottish Clan, unless someone named "X Mark" was born in Scotland. (I know that by Clan MacBubba, which is a recognized Clan SOCIETY, but not a real "clan," as they can't claim a historic "MacBubba" or "Bubba" that fits official requirements.)
(Me being nit-picky.)

Great, but let's have it in Latin.

Neatly put. We're an international clan society, even if we're not a historic clan. This for me encapsulates the thoughts in Panache's excellent post atop this thread.

In my capacity of (retired) graphic designer, I thought I'd throw this into the melting pot as maybe the starting point of an emblem/badge design...

The leaves obviously make an 'X'. The centre of the leaves are interlinked as a representation of 'brotherhood'. The decided motto I would see as being underneath, across the lower leaves, on a curved panel.

what can I say but "wow!"
Hi folks!
What an amazing feeling, reading thru this thread!
Sporranlegionaire, I like your design! I'd suggest using the traditional garter belt to encircle the emblem, perhaps?
And that motto, "By choice, not blood" is simply excellent!
As for the "clan/not a clan" commentary, well.... sociologists have been discussing the way the Internet has enabled people from every country to find like-minded people and form a 'community'... they aren't classified as a "group" because they are united by a shared purpose, a shared sense of belonging, and a shared sense of identity. I think X-Markers qualify as a community in the sociological sense, and if that's not a clan, I don't know what is!
Now... about that xmarks cloth?
cheers
