Especially here in the States, since we've basically become a service-oriented economy.
I fear we're drifting off topic though and headed for a reprimand...

Hi Richard,
Just to make sure: Sending goods inside EU are not taxable, right? Because my next kilt will be a UnionKilt and I would like to make sure that I will have no surprise from the dutch custons when it arrive

An idea on purchasing kilts.
If I were to send a gift of cash to an american xmarker, who then by shear coincidence was exactly the same size as me and again by shear coincidence had exactly the kilt I needed. Could he then send it to me as a gift ?
A gift being sent to a friend as not taxable at customs is it ?
mmm should stop drinking single malts makes by brain sleepy ;)

Here in the United Kingdom, gifts sent from countries outside the EU ARE liable for tax when they are over a certain value. Those sent from another EU country are not. This is probably common across Europe. I thought I had a Government website bookmarked which relates to these matters in detail, but I cannot find it - nor can I remember what that certain value is!

Seem to recall some spanish country was allowing people to login and send a gift of tax free cigarettes to the UK think that lasted a year or so before it was stopped ;)
I guess whichever you do yourll end up paying. here in the Netherlands for example they are talking about adding an extra tax to MP3 players!!
Well I guess the best option is to buy local ;) support the local eco system....

Well, Jerry from SWK in one of his emails to me told me that he already had a warning from the Canadian goverment due to a gift he sent to Canada.
I don't think this strategy can work for more than once or twice...
I think we have to buy from our own coutry/economic community or pay the importing prices...

I'm rather hoping that they're not considering kilts, kilt jackets and sporrans as "luxury" items. I'm sure that you can find a pair of trousers for three or four hundred bucks but you can find a pair for ten bucks... while there are the acrylic kilts available at a moderate price, there's really no "cheap" alternative to kilts. All the duties and tariff stuff just doesn't make sense in the case of things like kilts...TV's maybe...but not kilts.
We just had a rather brilliant editorial in the Chicago Tribune this morning about tariffs and protectionism and how they are actually hurting the economy of the State of Illinois...go figger!
Best
