Advice on islay

Ok,

I have convinced the wife Islay is a nice place to go on holiday so I have a week to wander the streets anybody point me in the right direction.
I have a trip planned to laphroig but thats about it any tips welcome

The capital of Islay is Bowmore, which also has a distillery and an old church and a nice pub at the harbour but not a lot of shops or hotels. Its a nice place to visit in summer but can be wet and windswept in winter. Ferries sail from the mainland at Kennacraig (2 hours sailing) or flights from Glasgow Airport (about half hour flight in a De Havilland Canada Twin Otter which takes twenty passengers).

Hello Simon, there are so many things to do on Islay, I think I could fill up a lot of pages with tips. For starters you might try and visit the other distilleries, go on a wildlife tour around the island, travel with a super fast boat along Islay's shores, hire a bike and discover the island, visit the Islay Museum, visit the restaurants and pubs, walk the country side etc etc. You can even visit the Isle of Jura. There is a weblog as well with an event calendar which is updated almost on a daily basis with news, events and background information

The best place to visit when you're on Islay is Jura ,sorry I'm a bit biased as I grew up on Jura.

On Islay I'd recommend a trip to Portnahaven and the surrounding coast.

I'm not sure if you would find enough to do on Islay to last a whole week unless you plan some fishing and it's a bit late now for the trout.

Well to be honest living here in the Netherlands I cant wait for the peace ;) its said there is no place you can stand in holland without hearing traffic noise!!..
(and its correct!!) except one street in the main high street in amsterdam!! its a haven for retired nuns and its really quite eiry!

I'm looking forward to the space we are spending the first week of two on islay then probably off to stirling to do a few day trips then finishing off at edinburgh.

I think the advice on visiting a couple of distilleries are good but I would also like to see the nature/culture side of the island.

Mmmm I typed and answer it seems to have dissapeared ill try again..

Islay is the 1st week of a 2 week holiday in scotland, 1st week islay second stirling then on for a few days in edinburgh.

The peace and quite I am really looking forward to on islay, here in holland we dont get that it's constant noise (car noise usually).

Anyhow thanks for all the tips guys maybe some photos and reports to follow ;)

Have not yet made it to Islay but my advice is to sample as much of its whiskey as possible!
